This movie looks incredible and I’ve wanted to watch it ever since I saw the trailer a few months ago.

Depressing comic from mp diary.
While playing frisbee on Tuesday I went for a long throw, didn’t catch it, and instead of slowing down with my feet I tried to hang off of a goal post. Newton’s first law of motion said no way jose and when I was trying to twist in the air, in a spectacular cat-like acrobatic, to avoid landing on my back I ended up landing on my left thumb instead. The odd angle at which my thumb was sticking out (or inwards to be more precise) gave a hint about the severity of the injury: either a pretty bad dislocation or a broken bone. I ended up going to the doctor the next morning when the pain and the swelling convinced me it was a good idea, and after 3 walks home, 4 metro rides, 2 bus rides, talking to about 40 different people, and showing obscene amounts of paperwork I got my arm plastered. Turns out I had fractured the base of the proximal phalange of my left thumb and in the process temporarily devolved my left hand by about 47 million years.
It’s obvious how hard some things will become when you don’t have an opposable thumb, but you don’t realize to what extent until you it happens. Any of the following activities become a challenge: drying your back, cooking, tying your shoelaces (thank fuck I use my shoes loose enough that I don’t need to tie them), putting on pants, applying toothpaste, washing dishes, opening your wallet and pulling something out, and so on.
I’ve got days off work for this because, well I’m not sure. I can’t type as well with the cast, but I can still work. I’ll get a few more days off and then I’ll see if I can go back. Sure, the first two days my hand hurt a bit, but thanks to those wonderful drugs that isn’t the case anymore. Staying at home without being able to do anything is driving me nuts and I still have another week and a half at least with the cast.

The Smithsonian has a great flickr account where they occasionally upload interesting and odd pictures. This belongs to the [spectacularly old-skool] American Gardens set.
I like the expression “You can’t see the forest from the trees” , and I find that it applies to many of the problems people have on a daily basis. I find that a usual technique I use when trying to solve a problem or come up with an idea is to step back from the issue to gain some perspective and try to find a new and completely different approach.
I’d heard about Oblique Strategies once, but they’d been quickly forgotten. It wasn’t until a few weeks ago, when I once again came across them, that I noticed that their purpose is similar to that of the concept mentioned above.
There’s a couple online Random Oblique Strategies websites, a iPhone app and a bunch of other bits and bobs. So, given their short nature and aphoristic style I figured they’d be a great plugin for fortune. Hence fortunes-oblique-strategies. If you happen to have access to one of the other editions, specially #5, feel free to add them or send them to me.

In keeping with my love for ridiculous flash meta-games here is Upgrade Complete. A game where you have to use the cash earned within the game to upgrade the game itself.
